Frosty Berseem Annual White Clover
Frosty Berseem annual white clover is a cool season, annual legume. Frosty is a new variety of Berseem clover bred for later maturity, cold tolerance, and improved nutritional value. This is a multi-cut variety which means the crop can withstand multiple harvests in a single season versus single cut varieties which will not grow back. Nutritionally, Frosty has excellent palatability for cattle or wildlife, crude protein levels as high as 22.1%, and relative feed values up to 182. This variety is not only great for forage, it can also be a useful cover crop. When planted as an early season green manure crop, it will generate nitrogen and biomass before being tilled under to be followed by a main crop. In northern states, it will winter kill if planted in the fall. In situations where winterkill is desired, it can be a useful crop to generate biomass and nitrogen without the worry of how to terminate in the following spring planting season.
Grower’s Note: This seed has a protective coating and comes pre-inoculated with rhizobacteria. Berseem annual white clover is a member of the legume plant family and forms a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship with rhizobacteria in the soil. The bacteria help capture nitrogen from the air and makes it available to the plant roots, which improves overall plant growth. However, rhizobacteria is not always present in the soil, especially if the host legume has not been grown in the target area in the last three years. Therefore, this seed is pre-inoculated to jump-start that symbiotic relationship. Coating the seed helps aid in germination and establishment. For specific information about the coating materials, please call our customer service department at 1-877-247-3736.
