Overview

Sainfoin is a deep-rooted perennial legume commonly grown in the western United States as a forage crop. It is used most commonly in hay and pasture plantings as a non-bloat causing legume. Interestingly, this crop is highly palatable; cattle and sheep prefer sainfoin over alfalfa. With its high protein and palatability, sainfoin is also preferred over alfalfa by mule deer and other wildlife. Its blossoms attract many pollinator species and the honey made from sainfoin is reported to be very good quality.

Supported Species Cattle, Hogs, Poultry, Sheep, Goats, Deer, Bee/Pollinator

What variety of sainfoin do you sell?
Our sainfoin is a VNS (variety not stated) sainfoin, also known as a common sainfoin.
Can you tell me what breed of sandpit you sell. I have been reading about this legume and interested in trying some. Can it be planted with alfalfa if yes at what rate?
Our Sainfoin offered is a VNS type - which ultimately means the variety is not stated. In Canada in 2016 & 2017, there were trials done with alfalfa, sainfoin, and grass blends. The results from these trials were mixed. Most often, sainfoin and alfalfa have different applications and require different growing conditions. For best advice on your seed needs and the application of sainfoin for your particular situation, we recommend getting in touch with our agronomist team to determine the best seed for your needs.
