Overview

Winter rye, also referred to as cereal rye, is a very hardy and vigorous small grain planted in the fall. Winter rye is an excellent selection for cover cropping, forage, or in wildlife plantings. It is widely adapted across the United States and can be grown under a broad range of conditions. With its quick germination, ground cover, and ability to be planted much later than other species, winter rye is a favorite among cover croppers and forage producers. It is frequently planted in the fall for forage harvest the following spring. Because winter rye is cold hardy, its foliage remains green well into early winter and serves as a great deer food plot attractant.

Can I use this grain for baking bread? Is this grain natural or modified?

Is this rye seed treated with anything that would make it unfit for human consumption? If I wanted to use it for making beer, would that hurt anybody? Fungicide, fertilizer, pesticide etc...

Is this grass a perennial and how late into October Can I plant in upstate New York?
Winter Rye is also known as cereal rye. Cereal rye is an annual small grain, used extensively for wildlife food plots, cover crops, forage, erosion control, and biomass builder. Depending on usage, rye may be planted up to mid-October. The general planting dates for New York is September 15 - October 15. CAN THIS BE SPREAD OR DOES IT HAVE TO BE DRILLED?
Winter Rye is a great candidate for the broadcasting method. When broadcasting, use the heavier seeding rate. We recommend planting by broadcast with rain in the forecast. Also, if the seed can be incorporated into the soil or raked in, any help with seed-to-soil contact will increase results.
