Vernal alfalfa is an older variety known for its winter hardiness, reliability and affordability. It produces good yields, even on fields without ideal growing conditions.Vernal exhibits excellent winter hardiness in the North and moderate regrowth after cutting. Vernal is mostly used in a mix with forage grasses for pasture, as a green manure cover crop, as a pollinator attractant crop for honey bees, or for hay production. In general, alfalfa is one of the highest yielding forage plants available. Where adapted, alfalfa does well alone or in a mixture with tall-growing grasses. Alfalfa produces best on well-drained soil with good water holding capacity and pH of 6.5 or above. It is long-lived and drought resistant.

This seed has a protective coating and comes pre-inoculated with rhizobacteria.

Coating color may be different than pictured above. Differences in color will not affect performance.

Can I over seed alfalfa after my last cutting of orchard grass this fall. I want to try it in a small 2 acre field. Should I no till drill or broadcast? Can do either. Thanks....Rich W
You can definitely try it! The success of this will heavily depend on timing and thickness of the orchardgrass. Timing is important because the alfalfa will need to establish a healthy root system to overwinter with success. In our region in Wisconsin, and I'm not sure where you are located, Richard, we want summer seeded alfalfa in the ground by the first week of September. On the thickness of the orchardgrass, the alfalfa may compete well with a thicker stand. We would recommend drilling in versus broadcast. Alfalfa needs to be planted at 1/2 inch depth for good results. Great questions, thank you, Richard! We hope that helps you on your journey.
