Red clover is a perennial legume grown for high quality forage across the northern United States and Canada. Older varieties usually provide 1 to 2 years of hay or pasture production. Newer varieties will persist longer. If alfalfa can be successfully grown, it is a better choice. Red clover grows on wetter and more acidic soil than alfalfa and it is a good choice for cropland where alfalfa production is questionable.
